But while Harron and Turner capably lead viewers towards an ever-looming and, in the movie, literally represented precipice, they ultimately yank viewers back to safety before "Charlie Says" can meaningfully shed light on its three protagonists' by-now notorious actions.

By the time Leslie seems to be on the verge of a breakthrough or a breakdown , Harron and Turner makes her deliver a trite little confession, and then rush us out of the theater with an equally tidy coda.

I left "Charlie Says" feeling dazed: how could Harron and Turner display such an unsentimental, but compassionate understanding of their anti-heroine characters' desires, only to pump their narrative's brakes, and leave viewers on such a flat note?

Who is this story for? In Harron and Turner's narrative, the Manson Girls initially appear to be interchangeable parts of a whole; eventually, they appear to be confused individuals with barely developed personalities.

Leslie is the closest thing that viewers have to an audience surrogate, since the movie's flashback-intensive narrative really begins and ends with scenes of her trying to assimilate into Manson's Spahn Ranch community, represented as a commune of hippies who were mostly united by their awe and attraction to Manson's pseudo-spiritual anti-authoritarian ideas free love, psychedelic drugs, and, suddenly, oops, a race war.

Through flashbacks, we see that she's confronted and therefore successfully broken down as soon as she arrives and is pressured into dropping acid.

This bullying strategy of indoctrination is repeated in various forms throughout "Charlie Says": supporting characters see, accept, and enact Charlie's doctrine.

They're like inexperienced actors who struggle to find meaning in the punishing lines that they've been asked to read. Many times, Leslie's fellow cultists struggle to convince themselves that they're happier because they've cut themselves off from everything outside of Spahn Ranch.

Leslie's memories mostly recreated through flashbacks are understandably warped by Manson's ego-smashing ideology.

That ideology soon becomes: "Be one consciousness. But that puts a heavy burden on Leslie's point-of-view and her struggle to understand what she became.

The most devastating scenes are, unsurprisingly, the ones that are most explicitly limited by Leslie's perspective.

We join her towards the end of a harrowing phone call with her mother, but never understand what led to that call home, or who, if anybody, told Leslie to cut her mother out of her life.

All we know is that Leslie's mom is sobbing as she begs Leslie to explain her actions: "What are you talking about?!

I really enjoyed this movie and any one fascinated about the Manson family should watch it. The teacher is prison is such an amazing character!

All of the movies have been good, but this one is one of the best. The Manson actor was pretty good. The best Manson actor ever was the one in Helter Skelter, he looked and acted just like Manson.

So he is a hard act to follow. Best Manson movie ever. Matt Smith did a great job. Anyway, 5 stars all the way; check it out.

This started out somewhat slow but I am pleased I stuck with it. Most films about this topic are written from the perspective of law enforcement, the victims, or Charles Manson.

This film approaches the story from three of the prominent female antagonists. Good writing brings out the complexity of character in each of these women allowing them to be sympathetic enough you understand the dynamics of brainwashing, cult tactics, the stripping away of personhood, and the overwhelming desire to be loved creating the perfect storm for disaster.

The writers walk you through the restoration of clarity to culpability and ultimately personal responsibility. The brilliance is that by the end the viewer is left with more insights about good and evil, criminality, and how complex their relationship can be.

It's thought provoking, dwells less on the acts of violence themselves, and more upon how people can suspend rational thought, believe fantastical untruths subjugating their thoughts and free will to an individual they believe all knowing and powerful because that person fills a void in their own psyche.

It's really well worth the watch it you like something more cerebral. A very different take on the same old story.

As a fan of this genre I say give it watch you may find yourself learning things You never knew. Charlie Says is one of several films to debut in that examines events of fifty years in the past.

The girls are held in isolation, but remain surprisingly upbeat and friendly toward anyone who comes into their vicinity. It seems they have indeed found some inner peace or salvation in their time at Spahn Ranch.

One is reminded of the famous, eerie footage of the three of them walking down a hallway, joyfully singing as they prepare to stand trial.

Through her eyes, we see flashbacks to life on Spahn Ranch. We see daily chores followed by group sex and LSD-fueled sermons in which Manson relates that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and the Beatles White Album is a new, prophetic scripture.

Charlie Says is no masterpiece. It has a low production value and plays like a made-for-TV film with lots and lots of nudity appropriate to the free-flowing sexuality of the era.

Certain performances leave something to be desired. But there is value in its attempt to shed insight on the Manson girls, who they were, and how they came under the sway of a psychopath.

This mentality sees anyone willing to commit a crime not as human, but as an animal that needs to be put down. On top of that, Tarantino puts the blame and punishment squarely on the followers, who were themselves victims of a dangerous mind.

Charlie Says is more in league with films like Monster and Joker that show us how killers are made, not born.

It by no means justifies these murders, but seeks to demonstrate how this could happen to an impressionable youngster in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He gained favor with famous men ex. Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys by pimping them out. He got them to do his dirty work.

If nothing else, Charlie Says puts Van Houten in the center of her own story. Look at her game, girl. David Fear. While well-intentioned and thoughtful, "Charlie Says" is too ambivalent and too safe to deliver much in the way of original insight.

Richard Roeper. A fascinating and feminist exploration of Manson's first victims: the girls themselves. Katie Walsh. You want to see how a person could surrender herself - her self - to something so diabolical, which demands a higher level of insanity than the filmmakers can muster.

David Edelstein. There's just not enough to Charlie Says, an ambitious, but uneven drama about the oft-sensationalized 'Manson Girls.

Director Mary Haron has found a surprisingly relevant way to revisit the grisly events: Through the eyes of the women Manson somehow hypnotized into carrying out the slaughter.

You're never gonna see me again. Leslie's mom briefly returns later on, but her presence and its relevance to Leslie's story is also limited by Leslie's inability to empathize with anybody beyond a point.

Unfortunately, "Charlie Says" doesn't always seem to be told from Leslie's point-of-view. In fact, most flashbacks are only important as a means of establishing a hyper-generalized timeline of events, leading up to some of the Manson family murders, focusing mostly on the killing of actress Sharon Tate Grave Van Dien , supermarket executive Leno LaBianca Dan Olivo and his wife Rosemary Jackie Joyner.

But any scenes that don't take place on Spahn Ranch feel insubstantial and relatively lifeless. Turner's overstuffed narrative ultimately concludes by asking viewers to think about how we judge the guilty.

But it's impossible to draw meaningful conclusions without a more nuanced understanding of what, exactly, the Manson Girls believed, how they processed Manson's words, and how Karlene was involved in their attempted rehabilitation.

I wish Harron and Turner revealed more about their subjects, even as I recognize that the insights that they do provide make "Charlie Says" a worthy conversation-starter.
