February 20, Rating: B- Full Review…. Chris Messina plays Jeremy, a new teacher at the school, working with the kids on The Crucible.

A failed actor, Jeremy shows a critical lack of judgment when he decides to play John Proctor opposite Abigail's "Abigail.

Melissa misses none of this. Trouble's coming. Shephard uses The Crucible as an organizing principle, calling upon its rich symbols and texture, both explicit and implicit.

It's part of why "Blame" is so beautifully intense. Arthur Miller wrote his paranoid play about the Salem witch trials as an allegory for the broad swath "McCarthyism" cut through American life in the s, but with the play's visions of teenage girls doing wild things in the woods, tapping into their sexual power in a frightened Puritanical world, it reaches far beyond its original inspiration.

Shephard sees in it high school writ large, where whispering gossip, false accusations, and sexually charged teenage girls make a potent witches' brew.

As the film progresses, Abigail's identification with the fictional "Abigail" takes the place of her limping identification with Laura Wingfield.

Gone are the plaid skirts and white blouses. She shows up for school in prim black dresses with white collars, and a huge cross necklace.

But then, growing in confidence, her skirts get shorter, her heels get higher. Abigail, the temptress in The Crucible , asserts her dominance on the imagination of this damaged teenager.

Celeste Montalvo designed the costumes, and her excellent work is a huge contribution to the film. Abigail's transformation has an effect on the other girls, whose own wardrobes get more outrageous to compete with hers.

Messina has a difficult role to play here. Jeremy is an immature, passive man, and touched by Abigail's intensity as an actress. His girlfriend thinks he's a loser and Abigail looks at him with devotion.

It's a combination he finds irresistible. Messina does not play Jeremy as a predator, although the character's actions clearly cross all kinds of lines.

If John Proctor found his Abigail more than he could handle, so too does Jeremy find his. It's a very good performance. There are multiple scenes in the auditorium, and cinematographer Aaron Kovalchik films the space as though it is an echoing chamber where time stands still, where people get to inhabit their dreams of themselves.

Abigail stands onstage staring into the darkness, bathed in blood-red light. Abigail and Jeremy run lines, their heads haloed with light against the black.

There are other beautiful sequences like Melissa and Sophie swimming on a rainy night, splashing around like the kids they still are; the grim-faced Melissa leading the cheerleading squad in a routine, shown in ominous slo-mo; the deep blue shadows in the car where Jeremy and Abigail sit and talk.

This is not the kind of film where people pushing 30 wear cheerleaders' outfits and pretend to be These young actresses feel like real teenagers.

The characters were all pretty well developed. I thought it was interesting, the idea of a person with a disorder where she takes on the personality of the character she reads about.

Unfortunately, that element was explored less as the story progressed. Gradually, it got to where she didn't seem to have any disorder and Abigail's character became her own individual, no longer parroting the character in the book.

But then, maybe that was intentional: maybe the point was that her disorder was gradually cured as she found acceptance and friendship in her relationship with Jeffrey.

Her relationship with Jeffrey is depicted mostly sympathetically. He's not shown as a one-dimensional monster preying on a hapless schoolgirl.

They never do more than kiss anyway, and he's shown as trying to do the right thing: he gets close to her because there's a mutual attraction, he avoids her when he's worried about their relationship being inappropriate, but he gets back with her when he realizes that avoiding her is only hurting both of them.

And of course, he turns down the other student who tries to seduce him. I wasn't sure about the ending. Maybe it was meant to be ambiguous?

While Melissa was falsely accusing the teacher, it became clear that the things she described were really things that her legal guardian had been doing to her.

But then it's not made clear what happens: Does Melissa admit to the police that she was lying about the teacher? Does the teacher end up getting arrested anyway?

Does her guardian end up getting arrested? Maybe the viewer isn't supposed to know. But I was unsatisfied with not knowing whether or not the police came to realize that the accusations Melissa made against Jeffrey were false and that her guardian was the only actual predator.

I thought this movie was great. It keeps three threads themes of teenage development pumping at once. The ending was very moving in a surprising way.

The film never went for cheap shots as far as exposing emotion or the complexity of the emotions we share with other people in relationships.

It was that complexity and "grey area" of human interactions not black or white that I liked best about this film. I hope Ms. Shepard directs more films so we can see more of that.

This indie film is a bit slow and under developed but delivers powerful acting and great scenes typically absent in low budget productions.

The film follows two teen girls in a high school drama class. Melissa is a provocative high school bully with a small circle of friends.

Her home life is highly dysfunctional and she acts out. Abigail is the opposite of Melissa. She's shunned for some emotional incident the previous school year that's never explained.

Abigail is an introverted conservative dresser with absentee parents. As the film progresses, the girls clash over the affections of their drama teacher, battle their insecurities, and one struggles to hide a deeper secret.

This is an indie film that requires time to unfold. I thought a lot about the film "Doubt" for some reason while watching. Great soundtrack as well.

I am so thrilled it's on Prime because I was waiting to watch it! I love Quinn Shepard and love her even more now.

I remember watching Unaccompanied Minors as a kid then Hostages as it aired. She's so captivating. Nadia as her nemesis had the right amount of angst that it didn't seem over the top.

The movie played out really well and IMHO, you would never know it was "low-budget". There was not a second of boredom. Major props to every single actor, especially those in the smaller roles.

The accuracy with which they captured high school is amazing- the immaturity of guys, snarky whispers in class and overall insecurity all make realistic appearances.

I think this is one of the best independent movies I have ever seen. Back at the top, Sanakan is killing residents, but the village elders frantically lead the rest of the villagers to the top of the village where they resist her using their remaining weapons.

Killy himself enters combat with Sanakan, who after knocking him down, notes that he is a body 'stolen from the Safeguard'.

Killy is saved at the last minute by Zuru, who throws his gun to him; which he shoots and destroys Sanakan, but not before Sanakan destroys Cibo.

Cibo, in an alternate dimension, pleads with the Authority, which controls the Safeguard, to let the villagers go. Unable to do so, they allow her to edit their base of levels of the City, which disconnects the level below the village from Safeguard control.

Cibo, now functioning through her only remaining arm, leads the remaining villagers to a trans-level railway car, but right after the villagers get in, an observatory tower spots them.

Killy throws the device which has been keeping him safe from the Safeguard to Zuru, upon which he says that he still wants to find the Net Terminal Gene, which enables human control of the Safeguard.

The villagers are then able to escape. Plans for a full-length CG animated film were announced in It was announced in November that the series would get an anime theatrical film adaptation.
